Choosing the Right Cable Tensioner for Speed, Adjustability, Appearance and Professional Results
Cable railing performance depends heavily on the cable tensioning system. Installation time, adjustability, long-term durability, and service-ability all impact project cost and finished appearance. Additionally, homeowners want choices to fit their desired cable railing system and budget. Below is a comparison of the most common cable tensioner options, highlighting why Atlantis Rail Systems’ solutions, especially the new RailSimple Push-Connect Tensioner, set the performance standard.

Swage Stud Tensioners (Conventional Systems)
Swage studs were the first cable rail tensioners available on the market. Atlantis Rail’s HandiSwage™ system utilizes a permanently affixed terminal created by mechanically crimping (swaging) the fitting onto the cable using a manual swaging tool or a calibrated hydraulic tool. This process produces a fixed, non adjustable termination point. Field tensioning requires removal of end caps, incremental tightening via a threaded nut, trimming excess cable length, and reinstallation of the end cap. Although swage systems provide high tensile strength and a clean aesthetic, they are labor-intensive, require specialized tooling, and offer limited post-installation adjustability.
Atlantis Rail Systems, Mechanical Swage Tensioner
Atlantis Rail Systems’ RailEasy™ innovation created a mechanical tensioner utilizing a wedge-and-cone termination mechanism that creates a secure cable end without swaging. Compression of the wedge is achieved using two wrenches forming a mechanically locked terminal. Tension adjustment is accomplished through a threaded body and lock nut allowing for precise, repeatable re-tensioning after installation. Compared to swage systems, this solution reduces installation time, eliminates the need for crimping equipment, and significantly improves serviceability and adjustability.
Conventional Push-Connect Tensioners
Most existing push-connect tensioners reduce cable termination time but still require multiple assembly steps. Installation typically involves disassembling the base, screwing one component into the post, reassembling the base, and then inserting the cable into the tensioner head. While faster than swaged terminations, these systems introduce additional handling steps that increase installation complexity and potential for assembly errors.
Atlantis Rail Systems, RailSimple, Innovative No Assembly Push-Connect Tensioner
Atlantis Rail Systems’ new RailSimple push-connect tensioner is engineered to streamline installation while maintaining professional-grade performance. The patent pending slotted base design allows the tensioner to be screwed directly into the post without disassembly. The tensioner head incorporates push-connect technology with an integrated rubber gasket that helps prevent debris and moisture ingress enhancing long-term durability. A threaded body and locking nut under a protective sleeve enables rapid and precise re-tensioning using two wrenches. This design minimizes installation steps, reduces labor time, and improves overall system efficiency.
Atlantis Rail Systems, The Only Brand Offering Options
Atlantis Rail Systems offers HandiSwage™ (the original swage tensioner), RailEasy™ (Atlantis’ first innovation) and the new innovation RailSimple to give the homeowner three choices based on their preferred cable termination look, level of DIY capability and price point.
